Everybody's Doing It

Top ten reasons for starting a blog:
1. I love my daughters' blogs
2. I miss writing weekly journals on my mission
3. Even my parents and my brother have blogs
4. Alan says "vanity" is a reason - so I must be vain
5. I don't spend enough time sitting in front of a computer screen
6. I want to improve my typing skills
7. I have so many pictures in iphoto that I never print or scrapbook, I might as well post them on my blog
8. I can practice putting only one space after a period (when did they change that rule?!)
9. I can amuse/embarrass my husband and children, and eventually my grandchildren
10. Everybody's doing it! (If they were jumping off cliffs, would I do that, too?!)

Janet: I am going to totally ruin your day by being the first person ever to respond to your blog Also, this is the first time I've commented on someone's blog, so this is just plain bad luck for you. Anyway, the editor in me has to answer your question about two spaces after a sentence. When did that rule change? It changed when word-processing began about 25 or so years ago. Think about it--most published documents (books, magazines, etc.) have full justification. When typing into a computer, you don't use the manual-return ("Enter") key to skip to a new line, like we used to do on typewriters. The computer program automatically wraps the lines for you, and in the case of full-justification, the computer spaces the words in the process, so that you have clean straight lines on both the right and the left sides of your document. Since the computer is spacing the words for you, it is superfluous for you to enter additional spaces, because the computer will either delete the additional spaces you have typed, or it will add sufficient additional spaces to make things all line up. Does this make sense? Now maybe this actually makes your day, rather than ruining it! Love ya! Jonn

Janet

Someone already beat me to answering your question about the spaces.

Glad to have you hear in the 'blogosphere'

Sorry no one's commenting on your blog, Mom. Better give them something else to think about. Get posting!!!

Thanks Janet, I am glad you will post your words of wisdom. I just tried to post on ours and I don't do it enough so lost everything I typed. I hit publish post and I don't know where it went. Oh well, maybe no one needed to read it anyway.

Janet: Thanks for posting your question and thanks Jonn, whoever you are. I have wondered the same thing about the spaces. Growing up in a different era I am still clinging to the past with my spaces. Now I have a real reason to change. On the subject of "Everybody's Doing It" I am not doing most of what everyone else is doing. I have spent a large portion of my morning trying to figure out why I would write on a blog, why is it better than email, and how to even do it. I just figured out email and now I have to learn blogging!? Lucky for me I have a 20 year old nerd at home who is helping me. Congrats on the new baby to Laura and when was he born? Elise
