Weekend in New York

We spent a lovely weekend in New York. We arrived on Friday and Laura and her three darling kiddies met us at the Cheesecake Factory in White Plains. (unfortunately, Alan had to work most of the weekend) I was so happy that Connor and Abby remembered us and we didn't have that annoying "getting reacquainted shyness." After dinner we went to Laura's house and watched A "Charlie Brown Christmas." Connor was so excited to sit by Papa Rich on the couch and watch the show together. Really the best part was seeing how happy Laura was to have us in her home, playing with her kiddies and seeing her life in New York. And the Buchanan family does have a good life; Alan is a hard worker and dedicated father and husband, and Laura is an amazing mother, devoted, loving, always teaching. Of course, Connor and Abby and Andrew are adorably cute and smart. (Rich just kept saying: "that Abby is so adorable!")

Saturday we met Alan in the city and saw the hit musical "Wicked." It was just as good as has been reported. I think my favorite Broadway musical is still "Les Miserables," but "Wicked" is a close second. We were so lucky that the stagehand strike ended on Thursday so we could use the tickets that Rich got six months ago. It was so freezing cold and windy in the city! But we were just happy to be there and enjoy the show together.

We went straight from the show to the Buchanan's Ward Christmas Party. It was great for us that we got to see Connor being a sheep in the Nativity put on by the Primary. We were able to attend Church on Sunday with Laura as well and it was nice to be in her ward and play with Connor and Abby during sacrament meeting.

Sunday evening we transferred to the Marriott Marquis hotel at Times Square. Rich had a Continuing Legal Education seminar on Monday and Tuesday. Monday I wandered around New York City by myself. I went to Rockefeller Center to see the tree and ice skaters. I went to St Patrick's Cathedral and lit a candle. It is such a beautiful building and reverent to me in spite of the fact that the public is wandering in and out. I spent a couple of hours at the Museum of Modern Art. I always enjoy an art museum! I also stopped by the NBA store and got Michael a tshirt. Tuesday I went to the Manhattan Temple. It was a long 20 block walk in the cold wind from the hotel to the temple, but I really like walking around New York City. We flew home that night. (to avoid another $600/night hotel bill!) It was a really great weekend; a perfect mix of being with family and enjoying some time alone.

Tahiti

We were blessed to get to travel to Tahiti with Tahitian Noni. We spent 8 days in a tropical paradise together. We're counting this as our 31st anniversary celebration! Here are some pictures: I couldn't get the captions underneath each picture, so here they are: 1. Who knew that pineapple grows on these small bushes - I thought there was a pineapple TREE! 2. The ocean view from our hotel. 3. The sand pool right outside our room. A swimming pool with a sand bottom - a true BOBW (best of both worlds) 4. The Tahiti Papeete temple where we did a session in Tahitian. 5. Beautiful sunsets - every night!

DOLPHINS!

I'll have more pictures of our trip to Tahiti and journaling later, but I needed to get out the pictures of us swimming with the dolphins. It was a highlight of our trip and we're so glad that we did it. We both love dolphins and Rich overcame his dislike of water to experience the dolphin encounter.

New and Improved Staroom

My staroom is my room for scrapbooking; it's also the family office, computer, homework, and project room. Unfortunately, lately it has become more of the latter and less of the first. I realized when I was in NY and read a book that Laura got for her birthday (which I couldn't find a picture of on the internet) The Organized and Inspired Scrapbooker, that part of the reason I haven't scrapbooked in three and half years is because my room isn't organized properly and doesn't inspire me to want to scrapbook. Also, just being with Laura and talking with her about scrapbooking really made me want to get going again because she truly is an inspired scrapbooker.

When I got home I got the book and read it, as well as using the workbook that comes with the book to help you realize what inspires you and your personal approach to scrapbookng and then how to make your scrapbooking space make you WANT to scrapbook. Well, it's taken me a couple of weeks to completely revamp my space and my supplies, but I completed this project last night at 10:30 pm and it feels great! I got a bigger bookcase since my old one was overflowing (thanks, Heather!) so now I have a "reading area" with my books, Ikea chair and lamp. I moved my printer and modem closer to the computer and made my "home office" space more workable. Finally I reorganized ALL of my scrapbook supplies. I realized that my approach to scrapbooking is motivated my color, so I organized everything into drawers by color. This included going through all my stickers, brads, grommets, die cuts by color - very time consuming, but rewarding because now I am excited to get scrapbooking. My next job is organizing all the photos of the last three and a half years into photo boxes so I can start scrapbooking!

Young Mothers

Ever since Laura and Mary began their blogs I have loved reading about their lives as young mothers. As I expanded and started reading the blogs of their friends and sisters-in-law as well, my life has been enriched. I want to say to all of you young mothers that the feelings that you have as mothers are universal. When I was a young mother I didn't have the blog format to record my feelings, the joys and frustrations of being a stay-at-home mother of little ones. So when I read your blog posts my heart is full as I can relate to all of your thoughts and I am reminded of the truly great mission you are all fulfilling to fill little lives with love and training and fun. I just want all the young mothers out there to know that I think you're amazing. You're doing the most mportant thing you could be doing at this time of your life. It is thankless and exhausting and exhilarating and sweet all at the same time. Keep up the good work!

OBUBA!

Logan and Mary have started a new company, Obuba. They make the "ultimate nursing cover-up." It's a great product and I'm really excited about it. Logan has worked incredibly hard getting it up and going. But I have a little pride, too, since I came up with the name! Obuba is the Korean word for "piggyback." It just seemed like a nice baby word. Check out obuba.com!

My Layton Peeps

It's time for me to post about the fine Hammer family of Layton, Utah.

SOPHIE: At almost 17 months old she is a whirlwind of activity. She's constantly on a "search and destroy" mission. She has the cutest smile and dimples (thanks for that contribution, Logan) and just melts your heart when she smiles. Which is often because she's a happy girl. When she's excited she jumps up and down and squeals with delight.

AYDEN: Ayden is a sweet boy. He's affectionate and doesn't have to be coaxed much for a hug or kiss. He's smart and is learning new things quickly at his preschool. For example he can say the "pledge of allegiance," and it's the cutest thing you've ever heard. I love it whenever I get to see Ayden and he is always genuinely happy to see me!

MARY: Mary is so beautiful both inside and outside. She's always been beautiful outside, but somehow she's never recognized it or acted like she knew it - which makes her even more beautiful inside. Mary is a lot like her Dad, which makes her easy for me to love, since I love him so much. She's kind and considerate and she's a really great mother to Ayden and Sophie. I love to watch her dance, I kind of miss that - we need a "watch Mary's dance videos" date! I love you, Mary!

LOGAN, aka ELDER HAMMER: When I first met Logan it was in Daejeon on our mission, within the first week that I arrived. Logan stands out wherever he is because he's so outgoing and friendly, and pretty cute, as well. We loved Elder Hammer long before he and Mary even met and couldn't be happier to have him join our eternal family. He's a great husband and father - always full of energy whether it's helping in the kitchen, cleaning house, changing diapers, and now starting a great new business: Obuba
